Australia Batting

The cricket match between IND vs AUS, 3rd ODI, Australia tour of India, 2023 was going to be crucial match. The first match of the series was won by India. While Aussies bounced back with complete dominant performance in second ODI, which meant series was going to be decided in 3rd ODI played at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. They were off to a flying start with Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head finding boundaries and dominating the powerplay overs. India was desperately looking for a wicket desperately. Shami, Siraj and Axar could not get that first wicket and Australia were above 60 in 10 overs. Then came Hardik Pandya who took the first wicket of Travis head in 11th over. He got Steven Smith out for a duck in his second over followed by Mitchell Marsh in his third over.

The good start of Aussies was negotiated by wonderful spell from Hardik Pandya bringing India back into the game. Warner and Labuschagne started consolidating and took Australia above 120. Kuldeep Yadav was bowling good lines and he took Warner, Labuschagne. Stonis was picked up by Axar. Alex Carey who made 38 was taken by Kuldeep. Australia was 203 for loss of 7 wickets in 39th over. India was hoping to wrap Aussies below 250 but that did not happen due to contributions from Aussies lower order batsman. Axar and Siraj bowled out Australia’s lower order in 49th over and Aussies reached a competitive score of 270 /10.

India Batting

India came to bat. Openers Shubham Gill and Rohit Sharma started beautifully for India. They were looking very good till Rohit Sharma miscued one over short ball and India were 65-1 with Rohit Sharma contributing 30 of 17 balls. Australia started bowling good lines now and Zampa was introduced who did not disappoint Steven Smith and took Gill in front of wicket. India was 77-2 and it was looking if Australia were now getting the control. Virat Sharma and KL Rahul batted slowly and took India past 100 runs. KL Rahul slowly got his timing and was hitting boundaries and sixes. For a moment he was looking sublime but then he mistimed Zampa on long on. India was now 146-3. Axar Patel came in may be to have a right hand and left-hand combination. He could not last long and got run out after big misunderstanding. India was 151-4. Hardik Pandya came in and batted sensibly with Virat Kohli. Virat Kohli went past 50. Loose shirt from Kohli in Agar’s last over and he was caught at long off. SuryaKumar Yadav came but he was out on duck in first ball in very next delivery. Agar took two consecutive wickets in his last over and India were 185-6. OMG!! Aussies are back in game with two quick wickets and India needed a partnership to make those 86 runs.

India slowly moved to 204 in 40 overs. Jadeja and Pandya need to take this match deep. India needs more than run a ball in last 10 overs. Aussies are bowling and fielding good, and runs are not coming freely. Indian batters are under pressure as run rate is increasing. India needed some boundaries now as they need 52 of 39 bowls. Hardik tried to clear the rope but mistimed and got out at 40. India is 218-7 and Australia are under control with Kuldeep, Shami and Siraj to come. All hopes on Jadeja but he needs someone to hang on with him.

Zampa was introduced and he took Jadeja. Now it’s Australia who seems favorites to win the match and the series. 44 runs of 28 balls are big ask from last two Indian wickets. The run rate was high. Shami hit few boundaries but was bowled by Starc. And Siraj run out meant Australia won by 21 runs.

Why India Lost?

India allowed 20-30 runs extra after Australia were down on 203-7. and could not get the Australian lower order quickly. Reckless shot by Virat Kohli, KL Rahul . Axar who was in top form in the lower order was sent up, was a mistake. Indian batters should have batted with more responsibility.

Match Result

Aus won by 21 runs. Aus claimed the series 2-1. Mitchell Marsh was the top run getter in the series.
